Hazel Glen College Mural Program

Hazel Glen College Mural Program

I was super excited to be asked to create a Mural Program for Hazel Glen College in Doreen. Because I always love running School Mural Programs, but also because the canvas for this Program was HUGE! 25m long and up to 9m tall it was going to be an epic Program! This large-scale project was initiated by the school to create a lasting, student-led artwork that reflected its core values and community spirit, and was something the entire community surrounding the school could appreciate and enjoy.

The full video from the Program:

The program began with a Brainstorm Workshop involving approximately 50 students from the Student Leadership Academy. Through guided discussions, students explored themes inspired by their school values—Respect, Resilience, Responsibility and Relationships—as well as key elements of school life such as sports days, City Experience excursions, and favourite subjects. Students also considered the native flora and fauna of both the immediate area and the broader Nillumbik region.

Common themes that emerged from the workshop included community, environment, and knowledge. These were thoughtfully woven into a mural design that featured:

  • Rainbow Lorikeet – representing fulfilment, creativity, individuality, and the importance of community connection.

  • Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo – symbolising fun, family, and strong social bonds.

  • Bees – representing teamwork, diligence, and positive contribution, with four bees subtly included to reflect each of the school’s four values.

  • Gum Leaves – particularly Mana Gum, known for its role in traditional welcome ceremonies, symbolising inclusion and community.

  • Woolly Tea-Tree – a local plant that reflects knowledge and adaptability due to its traditional uses in medicine and tool-making.

Following the design phase, students took part in multiple Hands-On Workshops, where they brought the mural to life using a specially developed Paint By Numbers technique. This accessible method allowed all students to contribute meaningfully, regardless of their artistic skill level, helping to reinforce the message of the mural and deepen their sense of ownership and pride in the finished work.

The program not only produced a high-quality, professional mural but also promoted wellbeing and mental health, giving students a creative outlet, a sense of purpose, and a stronger connection to their school environment. The result is a powerful, student-led artwork that celebrates the unique culture of Hazel Glen College and is enjoyed by the broader community.
