Case Study - Chillin' Air Conditioning Artwork
When: July, 2021
Client: Chillin' Air Conditioning
Mission: To create some iconic surf & skate inspired artwork for Chillin' Air Conditioning to use as new logos. Richard (Director of Chillin' Air) is a massive skate nut (you should see his "board" room filled with old school decks from way back and my own Wall Art Decals!), loves skateboarding and really wanted to capture the fun & style from surfing & skateboarding for his business. The brief to create a skate style design Rick could use for his business was just too good to pass up!
Scope of Work: Creating the logos for Chillin' Air branches, located south of Brisbane in Queensland and another new location on the Sunshine Coast. Obviously working with the Air Conditioning professionals we needed these designs to be COLD! The main logo had to be skate themed due to Ricks passion - so I always loved the idea of taking the Chillin' Air name and carving it out of ice blocks and whats the coolest cat in the snow? Of course the infamous Yeti! is the perfect one to be shredding waves & grinding up ice blocks!
The project expanded to include creating reusable Wall Decals to decorate the offices at Chillin' Air HQ as well as customising a set o skateboards with the artwork.
Medium: With all commission artwork I start with pencil & paper sketch, to get the rough positioning of key elements & how the design will work together. I then used digital illustration programs ProCreate & Adobe Illustrator to add details, colours, lines & finalise the designs ready for printing.
In this case I printed vinyl stickers, custom skateboards and custom Wall Decals. I provided the print file that allowed for Chillin' Air to arrange their own vehicle vinyl stickers as well.
Results: Rick & the whole team at Chillin' Air Conditioning loved the artwork I created so much they had their company van fleet updated to include the artwork and the extra large Wall Decals made for the office space. Rick was also kind enough to recommend my artwork to the national air conditioner manufacturer Gree Air Conditioners, who have commissioned some cool (pun definitely intended!) artwork for their brand!
Overall the mission to create this design that captured the fun & eclectic surf & skate culture and present it in a way that works for a Queensland air conditioning company!
This positive testimonial from Rick, Director Chillin' Air Conditioning.
“I contacted Kyle if he would interested In custom designing some logos and art work for my company “Chillin Air Conditioning” after coming across his work on face book and then purchasing some of his RAD decals for our office walls which all the staff and clients love. Kyle jumped at the opportunity and he nailed both our designs first go! Kyles approach, professionalism and ease dealing with Kyle made the process so easy! I highly recommend Kyle / Brightside Art to anyone wanting his brilliant art work & designs, I already have recommended many of my customers to him which they are advising me the exact same experience! Great work Kyle! Love the new Chillin skate boards and all the new printed decals for our walls."

Case Study - Bunnings Warehouse Easter Activations
When: April, 2021
Client: Bunnings Warehouse
Mission: Every year Bunnings Warehouse (the leading Australian Home Improvement Retail Chain) celebrate Easter long weekend in Australia with in-store activations all centred around colour! The mission presented was to use colour & exciting artwork to inspire & engage with the local community shoppers and showcase and chat about some of the products sold at Bunnings stores. With a secondary goal to donate the completed artworks to local community groups.
Scope of Work: I was asked to create pop-up art studios at two Bunnings locations in Victoria and create two seperate, exciting artworks inspired by the local communities I would be painting in. I choose to create a bright, bold wave design for the Port Melbourne Bunnings - this artwork was being donated to the Port Melbourne Surf Lifesaving Club, so a wave was the perfect piece of art to thank them for their community service.
The second artwork was for the Altona Bunnings store and was being donated to a local Community Arts Centre that encourages people from all walks of life to try making their own art, hosts local artist exhibitions, teaches art classes and provides an informative hub for local artists around Altona. For this piece I decided to use bright colours & bold text with the words "Make Art, Have Fun" as a nice reminder that art should be about sharing creativity, self expression and having fun!
Both artworks were prepared beforehand to allow the final touches to be completed in-store to engage with the local community and shoppers.
Medium: Using live art activations to complete artworks on large-scale canvases. I used all the products that could be found within the Bunnings stores. Allowing for the interest from the shoppers to be able to go to the paint/ craft sections of the store and purchase the exact same products I was painting it.
Results: With two full days of painting at the two store locations the community and shoppers where stoked to chat about art & creativity and the various tools used to create my art. The Bunnings staff were excited and grateful for the activity to encourage shoppers to check out their arts & craft aisles and products as well as share some DIY tips on painting canvases and murals in your own home.
The local community groups who received the artworks were very grateful to have these unique, hand painted artworks to display in their club rooms and reception area to connect with their community and staff/ volunteers.
Overall the mission to use colour and art to inspire and connect with the Bunnings' communities over Easter worked very well. Art never fails to intrigue, inspire and engage with customers - bright, happy designs draw people in through curiosity and my friendly and positive approach always leaves people smiling and encouraged to try their hand at their own creative endeavours.
This positive testimonial from the In Store Activation Manager Rhiannon:
“Kyle Brightside was an absolute pleasure to work with over our Easter campaign. We set him a brief and he expertly used our products to bring that brief to life! The live art demonstration he did in-store led to great customer engagement and interaction. Kyle was able to inspire our customers to pick up a paint brush and get creative. We thoroughly enjoyed working with Kyle and will look to do so again in the future.." - Rhiannon, In-Store Vibe Coordinator, Bunnings Warehouse

]]>When: July 2018
Client: State University of California Cal Poly Pomona
Mission: To create artwork that will engage with the student population and bring them joy and encourage them to reflect and enjoy their time at Cal Poly Pomona.
Scope of Work: I created some mandala themed artwork painted directly onto a 20ft wall in their student cafeteria. The theme to encourage students to reflect on their time at Cal Poly Pomona and seek out enjoyment. The secondary brief was to create the mural artwork that would engage with the students in a positive way.
Medium: Mural was painted with acrylic paints & brushes to ensure no-mess, no smell and take up limited space within the venue. I had a strict timeframe to complete the artwork in a single day, so working within these strict time restrictions we were able to create the best outcome to the highest standard.
Results: Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive for the art mural. With leading staff and stakeholders impressed by the life & energy the artwork adds to the student space.
Students have demonstrated their appreciation for the art mural through numerous selfies being taken in front of the works to share with their social media and friends & family.
This positive testimonial from the Director of Marketing at State University of California:
“We saw Kyle's designs & knew he was right for our project. We reviewed the works of a number of artists & found his style & creativity to be exceptional & rare ... Seeing our students take photos of his work & constantly return to the mural is a testament his art connects with people & can inspire our student community to enjoy their time at Cal Poly Pomona." - Edwin Santiago, Director of Marketing Cal Poly Pomona.

]]>When: April 2018 & 2019
Client: The Drop Festival
Mission: To showcase the art connected to Surf Culture. And create an engaging, exciting & uniquely “surf” art space for festival goers to enjoy & interact with the artwork & artists.
Scope: Curate & manage an engaging & exciting Art Zone at The Drop Festival, 2018 & 2019.
Background: The Drop Festival is a travelling music festival that works closely with the World Surf League Australian tour competition stops. Since the first year of the festival operating Kyle has been contracted to create art zones that offer surf related art demonstrations to engage with the patrons, offer an exciting & fun element to the event and share the connection between creative expression through art and the surf culture community.
Medium: Artworks were created with acrylic paint marker pens - non-messy, have no smell and take up very little space, onto recycled surfboards Kyle sourced specifically for the events.
Live: “Festivals are awesome environment, but sometimes attendees need a break from the bar cues or live music. Art is an awesome break up from the main stage and The Drop Festival I created a relaxed & chilled zone were festival goers could hang out, want & chat with me about painting surfboards, paint markers used & how to protect the artwork once its finished. People love to see & experience something unique when they go to festivals, so was cool seeing a few people giving surfboard painting a go & even using some of my finished surfboards as props for photos!”

]]>When: December 2019
Client: Mose & Co. Market Wholefoods
Mission: To create mural artwork that would be original, unique & connect with the stores regular customers & invite new customers into the store from the market.
Scope of Work: The first stage was to paint a mural within the whole foods store that would connect with customers & draw attention to the brand logos & colours that would link back to the online store.
The second stage was to utilise a dead space wall in a high foot traffic area to encourage market shoppers to enter the whole foods store around the corner. Painting a large scale mural here in Kyle’s memorable & photogenic geometric mandala style to provide the perfect branded backdrop for shoppers to take photos in front of as well as entice shoppers to discover the Market Whole food store around the corner.
Medium: The large-scale art murals were painted over 3 and a half days using brushes and acrylic paints. This ensures minimal space, no mess & no smell. Kyle was able to work around the “market day” schedule and by using acrylic paints without any smell allowed the workers to continue their stocktake while the artwork was being created.
Results: Feedback from the regular shoppers has been overwhelmingly positive! The clients’ loved the artwork, but the real test is if the regulars love it!
With everyone enjoying the new creative & inspiring energy in the store they said it brings new life to the store within the South Melbourne Market.
The results from the exterior mural has seen an increase in foot traffic into the whole foods store and also has allowed the store owners to see photos of the mural under the hashtag South Melbourne Market, that allows them to engage directly with people who have taken photos in front of the mural. This is the ideal result with an increase in the “Real-life” experience shoppers receive when they attend the store as well as the bonus of online promotion and organic attention.
